It’s not the infections fault; why trying to treat bacterial and viral infections is not the answer in PANS.

An exclusive session on the biggest challenges in PANS care today and the future of research and treatment.

Zonulin, Barrier Integrity, and the Gut–Brain Axis in PANS & PANDAS.

An essential conversation about how the community of microbes in the body influences immune balance and brain function in PANS.

"The PANS Parent collective is absolutely wonderful, and I have learnt so many new things from both the parent calls and the presentations. It was great being able to get some quick information on the weekly call to help with healing and minimise the risk of a flare. I’m looking forward to the next presentations."
- Katherine, WA

PANDAS is an acronym for Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders associated with streptococcal infections. PANDAS is characterised by acute onset obsessive-compulsive and/or tic disorder in children following an infection with Group A beta-haemolytic Streptococcus.
Technically, PANDAS is a sub-type of PANS, and whilst the presenting clinical picture is very similar, the name denote the difference in the initiating infection.
A unique characteristic of PANS is the sudden onset of PANS. Children can go from symptom free to intense OCD and/or tics seemingly overnight. Though many parents will report that there may be a history of anxiety or even non-impairing mild OCD, but at subclinical levels prior to fill initiation. Often these levels of symptoms are not recognised by parents until after acute exacerbation and it’s not until retrospect that they are identified due to lack of impairment on daily routine and/or activities.
Children get sick all the time.
That’s normal. What’s not normal is when an infection sets off an immune response that impacts the brain and doesn’t switch off.
Too many practitioners focus only on the virus or bacteria — chasing after microbes with antimicrobial agents.
At ReMed, we look deeper:
1. Why is the immune system stuck in attack mode?
2. Why is it triggering brain inflammation instead of resolving it?
This shift in focus changes everything.
It moves us away from blaming the infection and towards restoring balance in the child’s immune and nervous systems.
One of the most frustrating barriers parents face is being told by a doctor,
“I don’t believe in PANS.”
But PANS isn’t a belief system. It’s not faith. It’s not opinion. It has been researched since the late 1980s, with clear clinical diagnostic criteria.
The truth is...
1. When the health system denies its existence, children are left misdiagnosed, often given labels like ADHD, autism, or oppositional defiance.
2. Parents are left feeling unheard, invalidated, and abandoned.
We stand firmly against this.
At ReMed, we don’t question
whether PANS is “real.”
We focus on what’s driving it and
how to help your child recover.
Another common misunderstanding is that PANDAS (the strep-associated subtype) is the only form of this condition.
In reality, PANS can be triggered by many different things:
- Viral infections
- Bacterial infections
- Environmental triggers like mould
- Even metabolic or inflammatory stressors in the body
And yet, families are still put through endless cycles of strep titre testing.
This is not only unhelpful, but often misleading because:
- A positive strep titre doesn’t prove a child has PANS.
- A negative titre doesn’t rule it out.
- Titres are only elevated for a few weeks, while symptoms can last weeks, months or even years.
At ReMed, we don’t waste time on irrelevant tests. We use functional assessments and root-cause investigations that actually
give us answers.
One of the biggest misconceptions in treating PANS/PANDAS is that you can follow a set protocol and achieve results.
But this condition doesn’t work that way.
If we see 10 children with PANS, even if they present with similar symptoms, they won’t respond to the same treatment.
Because...the underlying drivers of inflammation are different for every child.
At ReMed, our focus is always on identifying and addressing the unique root causes in each child — whether it’s immune dysfunction, environmental triggers, or barrier breakdowns.
It’s our signature tailored approach that leads to remission.
Perhaps the hardest part for parents isn’t just the symptoms — it’s the blame.
Friends, family, and even schools often assume a child’s behaviour is a result of “poor discipline.”
Parents are told to “be tougher” on their child, as if OCD, rage attacks, or crippling anxiety could be disciplined away.
This could not be further from the truth. You can’t punish a child out of PANS. In fact, harshness only worsens the child’s symptoms and the family’s distress.
The ReMed philosophy replaces judgment with compassion.
We give parents the tools to understand what’s happening in their child’s brain and practical strategies for supporting them day-to-day.
PANS and PANDAS don’t just affect one child.
They affect the whole household: siblings, parents, relationships, and school life.
Because day-in, day-out...
- Sleep is disrupted.
- Daily routines collapse.
- Parents are left exhausted, stressed, and often hopeless.
We understand this.
That’s why our approach isn’t just about treating the child....
It’s about supporting the family as a unit
Our focus is to help restore calm, confidence, and resilience in everyone involved.
